About Us

The Sanctuary was founded by Alan Fraser in May 1982 and registered as a Charity in August 1984.

The Sanctuary is a member of the National Equine Welfare Council as well as an associate of The Blue Cross Animal Welfare Charity.

Originally the Sanctuary was set up in Kent, England. Unfortunately there was not enough land to provide sanctuary for the ever-increasing number of needy animals, and in 1991 Mr Fraser moved to Milton of Ogil, in Scotland.

All of the donkeys, ponies and horses, 110 in total, were transported from Kent to their new home here. We currently have 11 full time staff, 12 part time staff and a number of volunteers who help care for our residents.

Mr Fraser, Founder & Chairman

"Over the past 25 years, the Sanctuary has taken in over 400 horses, ponies and donkeys. We have provided a haven and will continue to do so with your help. They all deserve to be cared for, treated with respect and to be acknowledged for the beautiful, proud animals that they are. They have no voice of their own to ask for help so I am asking you on their behalf : please help us to help them."

The estate covers 260 acres, which is divided into 25 paddocks.Eight of the shelters in the paddocks are specifically designed to cope with the harsh climate. These winter shelters are constructed of brick and provide shelter against the elements. Wooden shelters are provided for the summer fields and allow the animals essentail shade and relief from insects.

Sadly, we are being asked to take in more and more unwanted animals, most of whom cannot be re-homed due to previous cruelty, neglect, ignorance, age and health problems.

Our total, at the moment, is 140, about 30% of these animals require feeds throughout the winter and approximately 20% require feeding throughout the year. On winter days we may put out up to 150 feeds. Some of our residents require up to three feeds per day and each one is tailored specically to each animal. Many also require medication and/or supplements to aid their recovery and to maximise quality of life.

About 60% of our residents have winter rugs and drying them is always a problem but we have successfully managed to raise funds to install a new drying room. This allows us to dry our rugs indoors quickly and to provide a supply of dry ones as required
