After being orphaned, pony Wee Ben was hand reared at Mountains and as a firm favourite with visitors and staff, his rehabilitation continues.

Some of our equines arrive here with profound problems caused by neglect, abuse or ignorance. Each animal is assessed and a program of rehabilitation started that best suits the individual horse or pony. This requires patience and expertise and it can sometimes take months to get them to a point where they can be handled safely without causing them anxiety.

Wee Ben arrived at the Sanctuary with his best friend Jude. Wee Ben was hand reared after being orphaned and as a result he’s not sure how to behave like an equine. He has no sense of personal space and sometimes likes to greet you by striking at you with his front legs. In the past, when thwarted he would have a tantrum which included squealing and biting. He is now at the stage where he behaves like any well adjusted pony but he still has the occasional nip and squeal if he is having an “off day.” His rehabilitation continues.
